Critical windows: A method for detecting lagged variables in ecological time series

چکیده
Many developmental processes in the life sciences, ecology and even economics depend strongly on environmental conditions occurring a bounded time interval, results often far later. Examples are as diverse plant phenology, grapewine maturation, diapause induction so on. The method proposed here, aims at detecting quickly such effects. basic idea is to regress recorded of series replications process against function an independent series. This variable defined set periods time, systematically scanned by varying their lower upper bounds. In simple cases when this integral effect strictly limited window, response model, under form correlation coefficients, tractable its shape predictable. It same window bell-shaped can be fitted with other weighting functions Beta polynomials. null hypothesis absence influence any past interval tested Monte-Carlo simulation. most likely determined maximum coefficient, bivariate confidence estimated bootstrap. period found rectangular shaped used starting point for more specific windows. technique has advantage avoiding split climatic into arbitrary slices, thus multiplying predictors complicating models selection. closely linked continuous lag distributed simplification that interest not explicitly dependent. given prediction aphids population dynamics, male morphs aphids, phenology ash tree.

Detecting cyclicity in ecological time series
Cyclic population dynamics are of central interest in ecology. Reliably identifying and quantifying the cyclicity of populations is valuable for the understanding of regulatory mechanisms and their variability across spatiotemporal scales. Cyclicity can be detected using periodogram analysis of time series. The statistical significance of periodogram peaks is commonly evaluated against the null...
متن کاملMethods for Detecting Early Warnings of Critical Transitions in Time Series Illustrated Using Simulated Ecological Data
Many dynamical systems, including lakes, organisms, ocean circulation patterns, or financial markets, are now thought to have tipping points where critical transitions to a contrasting state can happen. Because critical transitions can occur unexpectedly and are difficult to manage, there is a need for methods that can be used to identify when a critical transition is approaching. Recent theory...
متن کاملA Method for Detecting Windows from Mobile LiDAR Data
One Sentence: This paper presents a novel method for window detection from mobile LiDAR data. Abstract: Mobile LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) data collection is a rapidly emerging technology in which multiple georeferenced sensors (e.g., laser scanners, cameras) are mounted on a moving vehicle to collect real world data. The photorealistic modeling of large-scale real world scenes such as ...
متن کاملDetecting Huntington Patient Using Chaotic Features of Gait Time Series
Huntington's disease (HD) is a congenital, progressive, neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive, motor, and psychological disorders. Clinical diagnosis of HD relies on the manifestation of movement abnormalities. In this study, we introduce a mathematical method for HD detection using step spacing. We used 16 walking signals as control and 20 walking signals as HD. We took a s...
